Salt Lick

Rolling west on US 12 through the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest, I came around a bend in the road where the Idaho Transportation Department had some maintenance buildings. At the entrance to a shed, an elk cow and her calf were enjoying the mineral tastiness of the road salt.

They didn’t seem to mind my presence as I stopped and captured them and their snack. The baby was more curious than scared. It is interesting to see how wildlife adapts to the presence of man, even in such a remote location. The calf brought a smile to my face the rest of the day.

Salt Lick

Taken on an iPhone 15 Pro and lightly edited in Photomator. I decided to use a black and white preset. The bright white salt serves as a luminous backdrop to the dark sculptural forms of the animals.
